A Rig Floorman, also known as a Roughneck, holds a vital entry-level position in oil and gas drilling operations. Working on the rig floor under the supervision of the Driller or Derrickman, the Floorman is responsible for physically demanding tasks that are crucial to the smooth and safe operation of a drilling rig. One of the main responsibilities of a Rig Floorman is handling drill pipe. This includes connecting and disconnecting pipe sections during drilling operations, known as “tripping pipe,” where pipe is inserted into or removed from the wellbore. These tasks require physical strength, coordination, and strict adherence to safety procedures. The Floorman also assists in maintaining and cleaning equipment, helping to keep the rig running efficiently and safely. Regular maintenance and minor repairs are part of the daily routine. In addition to pipe handling, the Floorman supports the drilling mud system by monitoring mud levels and cleaning mud pits. They often perform general labor tasks, including moving heavy tools, assembling equipment, and assisting in rig-up and rig-down procedures when moving to a new location. Working conditions for Floormen are challenging. The job involves long hours (typically 12-hour shifts), harsh weather, noise, and physically strenuous work.
