Roles and Responsibilities
A Drilling and Workover Rigs Safety Advisor plays a critical role in ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient operations on oil and gas rigs. This professional is responsible for promoting a strong safety culture by implementing health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies in line with company standards and regulatory requirements. The Safety Advisor conducts regular site inspections, hazard identification, and risk assessments to minimize the likelihood of incidents during drilling, workover, and well intervention activities. Key duties include monitoring high-risk operations such as lifting, pressure control, confined space entry, and hot work, while ensuring proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). The advisor delivers safety inductions, toolbox talks, and emergency response drills, ensuring all crew members and contractors understand safe work practices. Incident investigation, reporting, and root cause analysis are also essential responsibilities, followed by recommending corrective and preventive actions. The Safety Advisor works closely with rig management, drilling engineers, and contractors to ensure safety requirements are integrated into operational planning. Strong communication, leadership, and observational skills are vital, as well as the ability to intervene when unsafe acts or conditions are observed. Ultimately, the Safety Advisor helps protect personnel, equipment, and the environment while supporting uninterrupted and safe rig operations.
