The role of a Rig Medic is a unique blend of high-level clinical care and proactive industrial safety. Operating in remote offshore or onshore environments, the medic serves as the primary—and often only—healthcare provider for the entire crew. Core Responsibilities Emergency & Clinical Care: You are the first responder for all medical emergencies, from minor lacerations to life-threatening trauma or cardiac events. You must stabilize patients and coordinate MedEvac (medical evacuations) via helicopter or boat when necessary. Preventative Health & Hygiene: Beyond emergencies, you manage the rig’s "sick bay," treating common illnesses and maintaining medical records. A critical part of the job involves conducting regular potable water testing and inspecting the galley (kitchen) to ensure food safety and hygiene standards are met. Occupational Health & Safety (HSE): In many operations, the medic doubles as an HSE officer. This includes conducting safety inductions for new arrivals, monitoring COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) protocols, and assisting with risk assessments. Health Promotion: You act as a wellness coach, managing programs related to mental health, fatigue management, and smoking cessation to keep the crew fit for duty. Key Requirements Because you operate under "remote standing orders," a rig medic must be highly disciplined, possessing advanced certifications such as Offshore Medic (OMS), ALTS, or BLS, and must have the confidence to make critical decisions without a doctor physically present.
