A Drilling Engineer is responsible for the technical planning, design, and optimization of drilling operations to ensure wells are drilled safely, efficiently, and economically. Key responsibilities include designing well trajectories, selecting appropriate drilling fluids, casing programs, and drill strings, and calculating hydraulic parameters to maintain well control. The drilling engineer prepares detailed drilling programs, risk assessments, and cost estimates, while ensuring compliance with company standards, industry regulations, and environmental requirements. They analyze real-time drilling data to optimize performance, reduce non-productive time (NPT), and resolve technical problems such as stuck pipe, wellbore instability, loss circulation, or kick situations. Coordination with geology, reservoir, HSE, and completion teams is also essential to ensure well objectives ,is responsible for the execution and field supervision of the drilling program on the rig site. The supervisor ensures that all drilling activities are performed according to the approved program, safety policies, and regulatory requirements. They manage daily rig operations, coordinate contractors and service companies, and verify that equipment, materials, and personnel are available and properly used. Safety leadership is a core responsibility: the drilling supervisor enforces HSE rules, conducts toolbox talks, monitors job safety analyses (JSA), and ensures well control procedures are strictly followed. They also oversee well integrity, monitor drilling parameters, and respond immediately to operational or emergency situations. Daily reporting, cost control, and communication with the drilling engineer and management are critical parts of the role, Together, the drilling engineer and supervisor play complementary roles, combining engineering design and operational execution to deliver drilling projects safely, on schedule, and within budget.
