Roles and Responsibilities
Responsible for planning, supervising, and safely executing drilling operations on a rig while ensuring targets are met on time, within budget, and in compliance with regulations. Core Responsibilities 1. Safety & Compliance • Ensure HSE policies are fully implemented and followed on the rig • Lead and participate in toolbox talks, risk assessments (JSA/JHA), and safety meetings • Ensure compliance with local regulations, company standards, and industry best practices • Stop operations if unsafe conditions exist (Stop Work Authority) ⸻ 2. Drilling Operations Management • Supervise day-to-day drilling, casing, cementing, logging, and well control operations • Ensure operations follow the approved drilling program • Monitor drilling parameters (ROP, WOB, RPM, mud properties, hydraulics) • Manage well integrity and well control at all times • Oversee BOP operations, testing, and certification ⸻ 3. Well Planning & Execution • Review and contribute to well design and drilling programs • Coordinate with drilling engineers to optimize performance • Identify risks and implement mitigation plans • Approve changes to the drilling program when required ⸻ 4. Contractor & Crew Supervision • Act as the company representative on the rig • Supervise drilling contractor, service companies, and third-party personnel • Ensure contractors meet performance, safety, and contractual requirements • Resolve operational issues and conflicts on site ⸻ 5. Cost Control • Monitor daily drilling costs and time usage • Approve service tickets, materials, and equipment usage • Minimize non-productive time (NPT) • Report cost-impacting events to management ⸻ 6. Reporting & Communication • Prepare and submit daily drilling reports • Communicate progress, risks, and incidents to onshore management • Report incidents, near misses, and equipment failures • Maintain accurate operational records and documentation ⸻ 7. Equipment & Materials Management • Ensure drilling equipment, tubulars, and tools are fit for purpose • Verify certification of critical equipment • Coordinate logistics for materials, chemicals, and spares • Ensure proper handling and storage of equipment ⸻ 8. Emergency Response & Well Control • Lead well control and emergency response on the rig • Ensure crew competence in well control procedures • Conduct and participate in well control drills • Coordinate with shore base and emergency teams during incidents ⸻ Typical Authority Level • Can halt operations for safety or technical reasons • Approves operational changes within company guidelines • Acts as final on-site decision-maker during drilling operations
