Roles and Responsibilities

Watchkeeping duties: Acts as lookout and helmsman, follows steering orders, reports hazards, lights, and vessels, and assists the Officer of the Watch during navigation. Deck maintenance: Carries out routine maintenance such as chipping, painting, greasing, rust removal, and general upkeep of deck fittings, lifelines, and accommodation areas. Mooring operations: Handles ropes, wires, and mooring equipment during berthing, unberthing, anchoring, and towing operations. Cargo operations: Assists with loading, securing, lashing, unlashing, and discharging cargo, ensuring cargo safety and stability. Safety and emergency duties: Participates in drills and real emergencies including firefighting, man-overboard, abandon ship, and pollution prevention operations. Deck machinery operation: Operates and maintains deck machinery such as windlass, winches, cranes, and capstans under supervision. Hull and ship structure care: Inspects and maintains the ship’s hull, superstructure, hatch covers, and deck fittings to ensure seaworthiness. Anchoring duties: Assists with letting go, securing, and heaving up anchors and maintaining anchor gear. Compliance and discipline: Follows safety procedures, international maritime regulations, and company policies while maintaining good seamanship. Support role: Carries out tasks assigned by the Bosun or deck officers and helps train junior crew members (OS).
